Hierarchy of hard surface floors against such considerations as
wear, stain and burn protection are:
Ceramic is synonomous with durable beauty! It’s stain, scratch
and scuff resistant, environmentally friendly, easy to clean and
hygienic. Even fireplace sparks are no problem for ceramic’s unparalleled
beauty. Porcelains, glazed and unglazed, red body and white body
tiles are all popular choices. This "pinnacle" of flooring
needs a very stable underlayment environment to be successfully
installed.
Ceramic starts around .99cents a sq. ft., (material only) or
so for a budget item, but can be more expensive for the quality
products.
Laminates are one of the hottest trends in flooring today
that can look like real wood, tile or stone. High performance laminate
flooring offers outstanding durability. It is not prone to scuff,
indent, or fade, even in sunny spots or high traffic areas. The
surface is also burn-resistant and will resist scratching from even
large pets. Softer and warmer than most hard surface floors, these
are very forgiving during installation because they are "floating"
floors and are not attached to the substrate. Many choose to install
these floors themselves and are successful, but they do require
some skill and expertise as we see many jobs not done correctly.
Laminates start between $1.00 and $2.00 a sq.ft. for the budget
items and can be more expensive for stylish or premium planks and
boards.
Solid Vinyl or Luxury Tile: A step up from no wax sheet
vinyl, these are even used commercially in some cases because of
its harder and more durable surface. Many design options are available,
for instance, diagonal placement, multicolor checkerboards, borders,
etc. These can be installed by a do it yourselfer, but we recommend
that the manufacturers installation manual be studied and adhered
to strictly to avoid problems. It is critical to always use the
proper adhesive and proper size trowel notchings.
No wax Sheet Vinyls are economical, comfortable, warm and offer
the most patterns and designs to meet any budget. Usually we recommend
a professional install these floors due to the technical nature
of the labor required.
No wax Sheet Vinyls are priced around the $1.00 s.f. range at
the low end and up to about $5.00 s.f. on the high end.
Similar to Sheet Vinyls are the new category of Fiberglass
flooring which offers consumers greater stability in their flooring,
with more strength in the sheeting, thicker, more comfortable inner
layers and more water resistance in the backing and core.
Fiberglass flooring can start in the $1.00 range and go up depending
on the quality of the product.
Commercially, Vinyl Composition Tile is a great choice starting
at $.99 a sq.ft. Carpet Tiles also do well commercially and
in some residential application.
Hardwood is a category all its own! The classic beauty and
natural look of hardwood flooring is very desirable. Most people
choose to use Hardwoods for emotional or traditional settings. You
can choose from a variety of natural hardwood flooring for elegant
or casual settings.
Hardwood pricing usually starts around $3.00 a sq.ft. and can
of course be higher for exotic species and wider boards.
Carpet adds that "comfort" factor that nothing
else offers. Soft, durable, warm and inviting, carpet is in a class
of its own. When it is fresh and clean, it can give a room a special
feeling that can't be found with any other flooring category. Carpets
should always be installed professionally.
Carpet pricing can start in the $1.00 s.f. range and go up,
the final price being determined by the fiber, the weight, the construction
and the warranties.
